Some One's Sons
March 10th marks the release date of the debut single of Some One’s Sons.
Hot off a sold out performance in Whelan’s, the band revealed their first single, a rendition of the iconic, ‘Óró sé do bheatha Bhaile’.
The young four-piece have quickly grown in popularity, due to their energetic performances of Irish trad classics. The Sons are noted for their rich harmonies, charismatic and lively sets, while handling ballads with a delicate and passionate touch. In celebration of “Seachtain na Gaeilge”, the Son’s chose their first song to be in Irish.
The song can be traced back to the 18th century. The modern lyrics were written by Patrick Pearse, as an inspirational marching song during the fight for Irish Independence. It centres around calling Irish people to fight alongside “Gráinne Mhaol”, the ancient Irish pirate queen.
“Some Ones Sons will follow Mick [Foster], with Marty saying he was 'blown away by the band during the Fleadh. They were the stars of the TG4 show that went out and played in the Market Square surrounded by thousands of people”
Clare Corrigan
Some One’s Sons’ version captures an “unrefined ruggedness” of the band. Lead singer Daniel Allen’s vocals are reminiscent of Tom and Paddy Clancy. With the booming backing vocals of band members Ray, Greg and Ger, the chorus’ act as a “rousing rally cry”. ‘Óró sé do bheatha Bhaile’ roughly translates to ‘Welcome Home’. Daniel said, “It’s a very powerful ballad that is close to the hearts of Irish people, both home and abroad.”
The single was recorded in Transmission Rooms recording studio in Drumlish, which has hosted one of Ireland’s greatest singer-songwriters, Shane MacGowan. It was mastered by Peter Montgomery, who has worked with artists from Damien Dempsey to Tame Impala.
The bands first post release performance will be their international debut, in Augsburg, Germany. “With the amount of messages we’ve gotten from Irish living abroad, singing it outside of Ireland will be a very special moment for us.” noted Daniel. “Even though we’ll be the one’s abroad, we’ll be welcoming people home with us”.
